Wales vs Italy: Close no longer good enough for hosts as Euros loom

Wales face their final chance to build Euro 2025 momentum, with head coach Rhian Wilkinson admitting it’s no longer good enough just to be close.

Wilkinson’s side close out their Nations League campaign against Italy in Swansea in what is Wales’ final fixture before this summer’s tournament in Switzerland.

Already relegated from League A, Wales have yet to win during the campaign – and still wait for a first a first competitive victory against a side ranked in the world’s top 20.

But they have been unfortunate. Aside from two deserved draws with Group A4 leaders Sweden, Wales’ three defeats have all been by one goal.

The latest came amid controversy in Odense, with Jess Fishlock having a goal not given when it appeared to have crossed the line – and not helped by the lack of goal-line technology.

Wilkinson admitted frustrations from that game will still linger when they welcome an Italian side who began the competition as the group’s top seeds.

But the bigger frustration is not picking up that elusive win, with Wilkinson saying: “I would have thought we would have one by now.

“I have been really impressed with the consistency of our performances and, in that, we are ahead of where I thought.

“But I did think we’d have got one over the line by this point. We’re close but close isn’t good enough anymore and we want to push our standards.”
