League Two’s bottom club Newport County bolstered their survival hopes with a resounding 3-1 win against Salford City.

The Exiles took the lead in the 13th minute when January signing Ryan Delaney headed home Tom Davies’ corner, which ended Newport’s seven hour wait for a goal with their first shot on target.

Salford took until the 38th minute to register a shot on target against a Newport County side who have conceded the most goals in League Two.

Ben Lloyd rounded goalkeeper Matthew Young to extend the Exiles lead just before the hour mark and moments later, Fuchs’ men struck again.

Lloyd’s initial effort was saved but Nathaniel Opoku reacted quickest to tap in his fifth goal of the season.

Salford grabbed a consolation through Wales international Ben Woodburn, who volleyed home in stoppage time, but it was too little too late for the Ammies.

Victory was Newport’s first in six and keeps them within three points of escaping the League Two relegation zone.

The Exiles now prepare to welcome Cambridge United, who have won eight of their last 10 league matches.

Salford, meanwhile, have lost back-to-back games in League Two for the first time since November, but remain in the play-off conversation having missed out on the play-offs by just one point last season.
