Napoli’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League were dealt a blow as they were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Copenhagen.

Scott McTominay’s first-half header put the visitors ahead before Jordan Larsson tucked home the rebound from his saved penalty with 18 minutes to play.

Copenhagen captain Thomas Delaney was shown a straight red card in the 35th minute after catching Stanislav Lobotka high with his studs in the follow through of a tackle.

Napoli took advantage immediately as McTominay rose highest to meet an Eljif Elmas corner in the 39th minute and guide the ball into the corner of the goal.

The midfielder’s fourth Champions League goal of the season saw him become the joint-highest scoring Scottish player in the competition’s history (five goals) alongside Kenny Miller.

Antonio Conte’s side could not hammer home their advantage though and gifted the hosts a way back when Alessandro Buongiorno felled Mohamed Elyounoussi in the penalty area.

Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saved Larsson’s spot-kick but was unfortunate that the ball fell straight into the path of the Swedish substitute.

The Italians have won just one of their past five Champions League games and find themselves 23rd in the table with one game left to play.

They will have to beat Chelsea in Naples on 28 January to guarantee a place in the play-off round.

Copenhagen move up to 24th in the table with eight points, but may need to beat Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou on matchday eight to be sure of a place in the play-off round.
